The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) intends to launch its 2024 manifesto in Winneba on 24 August 2024 following the embarrassment faced by the party’s running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang when she visited the Winneba market.
At a meeting by the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the party on Wednesday 7 August 2024, according to an insider, the party has settled on Winneba as the venue for the manifesto launch.
“The reason for Winneba as the venue for the program stems from that embarrassing incident that happened to the party’s running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang when he visited the Winneba market where the market women abandoned her to follow the MP, Afenyo-Markin who had come to the market that Friday” the insider who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed.
“The choice of Winneba is to neutralize the damage done not only to Mahama’s running mate but to the party in its entirety. Thousands of party members will be bussed to Winneba to create the impression that the Effutu people support the NDC, contrary to the reports of the day” he added.
It could be recalled that market women in the Effutu Municipal capital, Winneba, on Friday, 2 August 2024, abandoned National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang when she went there to talk to them about NDC, according to reports.
Things would go sour for Naana Jane and her team as soon as the Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, who was billed to tour the place, was spotted in the market.
All the gathering with John Mahama’s running mate left her for Afenyo-Markin who interacted with the market women on various issues.
What was more interesting was that even market women including diehard NDC members who were in their party’s colours also left Naana Opoku Agyemang to follow Afenyo-Markin.
The entire market could be heard shouting “Show Boy! Alex Show Boy! Do the Do! Do the Do!” amongst other popular accolades they were chanting for their MP.
Embarrassed by the scenes in the market, Naana Opoku Agyemang and her team had to abandon ship as they left Winneba to avoid further embarrassment.
“What transpired in the main market of Winneba could only send chilling signals to the opposition National Democratic Congress that Effutu is a no-go area for the party, thanks to the Majority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin,” a member of Afenyo Markin’s campaign team told journalists.
“The Effutu MP makes it a point to visit these market women on market days whenever he is in the constituency. It was one of those visits that resulted in Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, otherwise known as, grandma, being abandoned by the market women.
Days after the news of the market women abandoning Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang for their Member of Parliament, several releases came from her camp flatly denying the incident.
The FEC of the NDC, has, thus, affirmed the story that made rounds that John Mahama’s running mate was abandoned by the market women she came to sell her party to follow the Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.
The party has, therefore, been compelled to launch the manifesto in Winneba to redeem the battered image of Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang in particular and the NDC in general.
